Check out our Costa Rica Activity Outdoor Activities Guide on the adventures you won’t want to miss!
Zip-lining
Also called “canopy tours” when they occur in the top level of rainforest trees, zip lining tours provide some of the most exhilarating ways to enjoy the beauty of Costa Rica. Stepping off that platform and flying over the landscape for the first time can be nerve-wracking, but it’s worth it. If a cable and harness aren’t your style, you can also experience these tours via aerial tram. Some of the best tours, according to Travel and Leisure Magazine, are Witches Rock Canopy Tour, Montezuma Waterfall Canopy Tour, and Sky Trek in Arenal.
Beach Yoga
We can’t have a Costa Rica activity guide without including beach yoga. There are so many yogis, studios, and retreats in the nation, you’ll never be able to experience them all. Nosara in the Guanacaste Province is especially known as a great place to improve your practice. Yoga Journal favors Blue Spirit Retreat, but Harmony Hotel and the Nosara Yoga Institute are also known around the world.
Horseback Riding
While zip lining is a great way to see Costa Rica from above, Horseback riding is the best way to see it from the ground. Your steed can take you along the beaches of the Nicoya Peninsula, around the base of Arenal volcano, and through the flora and fauna of the rainforest.
Surfing
World famous for surfing, Costa Rica has 1,290 km of coastline. The Caribbean side of country has some of the most challenging surf in the world, but the waves are mostly caused by seasonal storms in the Gulf of Mexico. The Pacific north and south have surf for a variety of experience levels available just about all year round. Plus, Simply Surf at Playa Guiones offers world-class surfing classes.
Stand Up Paddle Boarding
Also known as just plain SUP, stand up paddle boarding is rapidly gaining popularity as both a physical challenge and spiritually relaxing activity. Test your balance with SUP yoga, or just keep it simple. The best places for this activity are calm waters like many of those on the Pacific coast, like Peninsula Papagayo and Gulfo Dulce.
